2. Overview of Networks

A computer network refers to two or more computers linked together to share files, printers, and other resources. The computers may be linked through cables, telephone lines, satellite, radio frequencies, or Infrared beams. The network may be as small as just two or more computers linked together at home or in an office, or as big as a corporate network at multiple locations spanning across the globe. The following sections describe different types of networks and the concept of centralized and decentralized computing.

Network Goals and Motivations:
*Cost reduction by sharing hardware and software resources.
*Provide high reliability by having multiple sources of supply.
*Provide an efficient means of transport for large volumes of data among various locations.
*Provide inter-process communication among users and processors.
*Reduction in delay driving data transport.
*Increase productivity by making it easier to share data amongst users.
*Provide centralized/distributed management and allocation of network resources like host processors, transmission facilities etc.
